My love for coral

In my teens and twenties, I had an inclination towards (cheap) turquoise and coral jewellery. But then again, I also had a thing for moth-eaten vintage clothes and doilly-like or eclectic boho dresses and skirts, haha.

But seriously, my love for coral stayed with me pretty much through the years, and it got re-ignited years ago when I saw this gorgeous coral ring from Dior.

Such a beauty. The blushing rose, the gold – they all work beautifully together. I never forgot this ring, but at about $4000ish (I think), I also never got it. I mean, IT IS coral, gold and a tiny little diamond.

On my way to Forum last night, I walked past a nondescript jewellery store at Far East Shopping Centre. There, amongst the gaudy baubles, sat trays upon trays of roses sculpted out of coral. An aha! moment.

I have a bunch of diamond jewellery that was gifted to me through the years for my birthdays, my wedding, etc. The designs are just not me and there’s a snowball’s chance in hell I will ever wear them. I had approached someone to custom design for me incorporating these diamonds years ago, but never got down to actually deciding on anything.

Now. I could buy the biggest coral rose for a steal and have a jeweller design the diamonds around it, for a helluva cocktail ring.

I have had jewellery custom-made before. I wanted a heart-shaped pendant encrusted with diamonds on a platinum chain for my 16th birthday (I know, so kitsch right), almost choker-like, for which my parents commissioned Larry’s. I’m feeling the same kind of buzz again.

Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait to get back down to that hole-in-the-wall jewellery store where I spied those coral roses.

I finally caught up with my magazine reading last weekend. (Other days, I am, just like you, absorbed in the CNN/Channel News Asia reports on the current situations in Mumbai and Bangkok.)

In every fashion mag, you are guaranteed an article on dressing for less, or investment pieces that can last through the seasons, and through such belt-tightening and sombre times.

I say, let’s escape for a while. Let’s retrogress, back to times of fewer complexities.

Dior’s Fine Jewellery Diorette collection conjures up pretty, pretty florals you would find in a summer garden, that wouldn’t be out of place in an Enid Blyton story. Splashes of antique-y colours such as coral, emerald, azure are lacquered on indulgently fanciful designs of daisies, bees, butterflies, and lady birds.
